Information

Otago International Excellence Scholarships welcome, support and recognise the best possible international students commencing chosen postgraduate programmes. These merit-based scholarships recognise academic excellence, diversity, and leadership potential in supporting high-achieving students in their studies. The scholarships are also designed to support those students best placed to make a positive impact on society in their future profession.

Eligible students

To be considered for a scholarship, students must:

  1. Be international students who will not be residents, everlasting residents or resident visa holders of New Zealand or Australia*; and
  2. Have met the entry requirements for an eligible programme; and
  3. Have met the award level for the scholarship; and
  4. Be subject to paying international tuition fees; and
  5. Be meaning to begin full-time study in that programme in 2023.

Part-time students

Scholarships could also be offered to part-time students so long as they meet all other eligibility criteria. The scholarship might be awarded on a pro-rata basis, based on the quantity of study applied for. Part-time applicants currently in New Zealand are strongly encouraged to talk to Immigration New Zealand to make sure their chosen study option is feasible under visa requirements.

Eligible programmes

Business, Humanities and Science

Students have to be applying to check a programme in one among the next eligible programme categories:

  • Masters (coursework) degrees
    Excluding the Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Masters (research) degrees
  • Postgraduate diplomas
    Excluding the Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Health (PGDipHeal)
  • Honours degrees

Selection process

Students might be assessed for a scholarship on application for his or her programme and recipients might be advised of their scholarship in the Offer of Place.

Selection of scholarship recipients is on the discretion of the University of Otago.

Conditions

  1. This scholarship is redeemable only as a credit towards tuition fees.
  2. Eligible students will need to have an Offer of Place for full-time study in an eligible postgraduate programme.
  3. International students currently studying, and as a result of complete degrees on the University of Otago are eligible.
  4. Deferral of the scholarship will not be normally possible.
  5. The scholarship applies for one yr of study only, for a student’s first enrolment in that programme.
  6. The scholarship can only be awarded to a student once, even in the event that they were to enrol in a second eligible programme.
  7. This scholarship won’t appear on the recipient’s academic transcript.
  8. Payment of the scholarship for recipients who begin their full-time study on the University of Otago in semester 2 and intend to enrol in full-time study on the University of Otago in semester 1 in the next yr, will normally receive half the scholarship amount after they begin their study in semester 2 and the remaining amount after they recommence in semester 1 the next yr.
  9. The Scholarship can’t be held in conjunction with a University of Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship or Master’s Research Scholarship.
  10. The Scholarship could also be held with one other scholarship so long as that is permitted throughout the regulations of the opposite scholarship(s). It is the responsibility of the recipient to declare multiple scholarships to the University of Otago.
  11. Students sponsored by their home Government or the New Zealand Government will not be eligible for this scholarship.
  12. In order for the scholarship to be applied, recipients have to be enrolled and studying the degree stated in the Offer of Place.
  13. If the coed will not be in a position to begin their studies by the enrolment date stated in their Offer of Place, the scholarship is not any longer valid. If the coed’s enrolment is moved to a subsequent start date, they might be reassessed for the scholarship to make sure they’re still eligible.
  14. Recipients conform to reasonable requests from the University of Otago to appropriately represent the University and the scholarship.
  15. The University of Otago may, at any time, suspend or terminate the scholarship, or require the forfeiture of such proportion of the scholarship because the University of Otago may determine, if it will not be satisfied that the recipient is enrolled and studying full-time, full-year, and diligently pursuing a full-time, full-year programme, or if the recipient has brought the University of Otago or the scholarship into disrepute.
  16. Upon the termination of a student’s enrolment for any reason, including his or her withdrawal, entitlement to scholarship funding shall be cancelled. In such circumstances, the University might also require repayment (in part or full) of any scholarship payments already made.

* Australian residents, everlasting residents and resident visa holders could also be eligible for this scholarship in the event that they are residing outside of New Zealand on the time of study, as they might then be subject to paying international fees.
